http://www.benscamera.com/urbex/WestParkAsylum/West_Park_Asylum_09.jpgI have chosen these images because i believe i can incorporate elements of each of them into my asylum. I like the design of the corridors in 'image 1' and 'image 2', and I think if I incorporate the style of them and modify the lighting, it would create a very eerie looking corridor. I like the use of pipes in 'image 4' and I believe they would work well with my design.
I chose 'image 3' and 'image 5' because it shows the interior's state of decay , therefore it would be useful for texturing. Last but not least, I chose 'image 6' and 'image 7' because I think they will help me design the rooms.
Specialist project: Abandoned Asylum
For this project, I will be designing and creating the interior of an abandoned asylum. Inspiration would be drawn through films, online videos, and photo references. The reason to why I chose to design an abandoned asylum is because I believe the element of horror that is portrayed through this type of building is rather fascinating and exciting.
When I have completed my project, I will be able to see if it is successful by people’s comments. This is because if I have achieved what I wanted my asylum to portray, it will be a very dark and unpleasant environment with an eerie atmosphere. However, if it fails to portray these characteristics, it will show that it has not been a success and I have not achieved its original goals - to portray a disturbing and unsettling environment. The method that could avoid this from happening is by doing plenty of research to allow myself to create the structure as detailed and realistic as possible.
While progressing through this project, I will need to make sure I keep to deadlines in order to complete this by the official deadline, and to do so, I will create a Gantt chart to keep myself disciplined during this project. This will ensure and motivate me to keep on track to finish my project on time. Also, by setting deadlines, it will improve my time-management skills so my work will be organized, and it will enable me to get my important assets done, therefore I can further improve my work if there is spare time at the end.
My finished product will be safe for all ages because it will not have any features that will scare people to the point they have nightmares, all it will achieve is a creepy look there will be nothing that scares anyone the most i hope to achieve is to give people the shivers when looking at my finished environment.
Firstly, I will conduct research for my project. For my film/television research, I am going to look at the set design of American Horror Story’s asylum, and I believe it will help me understand the layout of an asylum better. Next, I will focus on image research, which will help me obtain different ideas and inspirations from different asylums. This will further improve my understandings, thus contributing to my concept ideas. My final method of research is to watch videos revolving around both old lunatic asylums and modern mental hospitals. This will definitely help me gain knowledge of the history of such buildings.
